Thousands of used computers are disposed or discarded every year by large corporations and enterprises. This is true throughout the nation and even in Arkansas. However, many of these computers are still in perfect working condition and are usable. They can still be passed along to nonprofit organizations, schools, and people with disabilities in Arkansas.

Teachers and principals in public schools and small educational institutions have been seeking help in providing them with usable computers that can help them in giving education to students. Employees and managers of nonprofit organizations with limited funding but are doing a great service to people in the community have no qualms in using discarded computers as long as they can help them serve the community better.

The sad reality is that thousands of useful computers are being destroyed everyday, many ending up in landfills, for the sole reason of protecting company data. People and corporations in Arkansas can prevent this premature destruction of useful computer resources by donating them for reuse by schools, nonprofit organizations, churches and individuals with disabilities who can benefit much from the use of these computers. There are computer recycling organizations throughout the US and in Arkansas that will accept and process these computers for reuse instead of destruction. Donor companies and individuals can be assured that all information from hard drives will be completely sanitized before these are donated to recipients.

Recycling destroys useful equipment and takes it apart so parts can be transformed and reprocessed as raw materials for other use. Reuse on the other hand involves reconditioning of these used equipments so they can be used again by people and organizations in need. Other used computers are still in perfect working condition that they can be donated directly to organizations seeking computer resources. It makes financial, social and environmental sense to reuse computers while they are still useful. Reuse instead of incineration or tossing them into landfills is also good for the environment.

There are several nonprofit organizations in Arkansas that can benefit from donations of computers to help them with their social work for the good of the community. One such organization is GYST House based in Little Rock, Arkansas. The organization aims to help men and women go back to society to become productive community members through a change in their lifestyle and behavior and with helping them abstain from harmful substances like drugs and alcohol. GYST House helps people from prison, the homeless, battered women, drug addicts and any individual that society has abandoned. GYST House is geared in using technology for their work as they use the computers and equipment they receive in training and preparing these people for employment or further education.

Another nonprofit organization needing the use of computers is located in Fort Smith. This is the Western Arkansas Counseling and Guidance Center. The center services and helps chronically and severely mentally ill adults by providing them an opportunity to learn needed skills in all areas of their lives. The center teaches these people to cook, run a second hand store and even clerical skills with the use of computers. However, the center still uses old DOS-based computers, grateful for what they have but would appreciate it greatly if they will receive upgraded computers to make their work a lot easier.

There are still other organizations out there in Arkansas and in other parts of the nation that can truly benefit with reused computer equipment. What others consider as trash, these people can turn into gold for noble purposes.
